How to Write a Book

There is nothing quite like writing a book. It provides an immense amount of pleasure as you have managed to pull a story from your imagination into reality. The art of how to write a book is fairly simple and straightforward. The difficult part is staying focused and on track so that you can complete what you have started.

However, you can write a book in a fairly short time if set daily goals and don’t stop until the first draft is completed. Here are five simple tips that will have you writing a book quickly and easily.

Work Out Your Story Before You Start Writing

You may have a wonderful idea to kick off your story, but unless you know how it ends you may get stuck and quite frustrated. Remember, not all great ideas make for great stories. So, you should write down your idea first and then address how it begins and ends so that you know where the story is heading. Once you are satisfied, add two or three good scenes or chapters in the middle and then connect them all up before you start your actual writing.

Set Aside Time to Write Your Book

You will need to set aside enough time each day to write out your first draft. You can spend from 10 minutes up to an hour or more depending on your schedule. However, you will need to set aside the time and stick to it if you want to complete your book. Writing a book takes discipline and even setting aside a few minutes each day will get the job done.

When Stuck, Use the Snowflake Method

Relatively few authors actually write books from front to back. Quite often, an author will get stuck and start writing on other sections of their book. This is called the Snowflake Method because you go from point to point and expand upon different sections. It’s a similar method used by students taking an exam where they get stuck on a question, so they skip ahead to answer the ones they know first before going back. It works for students and it will help you complete your book much faster.

Hire an Editor

Once you have completed your first draft and then gone over it a few times to improve it, hire an editor to take a look. An editor offers another set of eyes that can see issues or difficulties with your book so that you can make the proper corrections. Quite often, stories will have gaping holes in logic or inconsistencies that authors overlook because they are too close to the story. An editor will correct that for you.

Write the Book First, then Worry about Publishing

A lot of literature is devoted to whether you should seek a publisher or self-publish, what format is best for your book, cover choices, how to market your book, and so forth. None of that matters until you have actually completed and edited your story.
